Traditional medicine

Traditional Medicine is the knowledge, skills, and practices derived from the theories, beliefs, and experiences native to the different cultures, applied to the maintenance of health and in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement, or treatment of physical and mental diseases. These systems, such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Unani, Kampo, traditional African medicine, and other indigenous practices, are centuries old and reflect a body of accumulated empirical knowledge. At the Traditional Medicine and Ethnomedicine World Conference TMEWC 2026, the Traditional Medicine track will examine recent advances in scientific research, clinical practice, international health policy, regulation, and technological innovation. The session will also stress ethical issues in safeguarding indigenous knowledge and the sustainable use of natural resources.

  • Traditional Medicine Systems
  • Indigenous Medicine
  • Ethnopharmacology
  • Medicinal Plants
  • Traditional Medicine and Their Authentication
Taking this into account, the next part of the session will focus on the growing use of modern techniques in the scientific validation of traditional medical practices, including molecular biology, pharmacological assays, and modeling technologies. Systems medicine and integrative diagnostics will be considered to understand the multiple-target effects characteristic of traditional approaches. Ethnopharmacology will be considered in the context of connecting ethnic practices with modern drug discovery approaches. Also, the use of modern methods for medicinal plant identification, such as chromatography, DNA barcoding, and metabolomics, will be highlighted as vital for ensuring product quality.

Moreover, this discussion will examine the global challenges that traditional medicine currently faces, namely regulatory harmonization, clinical evaluation, and integration into regular healthcare systems. Particular attention will be paid to sustainable plant harvesting practices, biodiversity conservation, and the fair distribution of benefits between indigenous people and corporations that harvest their plants.

Key Points Include:
  • The integration of Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine with the modern healthcare system
  • The function of Ethnopharmacology in the drug development process
  • Authenticating medicinal plants by means of modern approaches
  • Utilizing systems biology in the study of holistic traditional medicine
  • Traditional medicines regulation and international standardization
  • The use of biodiversity and sustainable utilization of medicinal plants
  • Ensuring ethical issues for the protection of the IP rights of indigenous medicine
  • Application of traditional medicine within evidence-based practice
Finally, the most important purpose of this lecture is to provide students with knowledge of the incorporation of traditional medicine into the modern healthcare system from scientific and ethical perspectives.
